Slip Into the Past...
Take a trip back in time. Smell the bread baking in the oven. Listen to the sound of an axe splitting wood. Watch a farmer and his team of horses work together to plow up the rich earth. Taste the sweetness of apple cider moments after it’s squeezed from the fruit. Touch the weathered wood of the house built in the 1850’s.
If this sounds good to you, put on your walking shoes, roll up your sleeves, and gather together your friends or family. Then, come and experience life on an 1880’s family farm.
Depending on the season, you can help collect maple syrup, assist the farmers in planting, hoe the garden, or help to harvest the crops. And then there are the daily chores. Help your child gather eggs right from the henhouse. Carry wood into the house so the farm women can cook on the wood stove. Take the slop bucket full of scraps to the pigpen and feed the pigs. Pump water and carry it to the livestock.
Or, if you’re feeling lazy, take a walk in the woods. Lean over the bridge and watch the stream gurgle below. Push a loved one on the swing under the old tree. Sit under the grape arbor and play checkers with a friend. Watch the oxen work in the fields. Talk to the horses. Listen to the sounds of the farm.
Explore the farm and learn something new. Find out what a summer kitchen is. Take a look in the root cellar. Walk the path to the privy. Examine the treadle sewing machine. Pump water from the old pump and taste its freshness. Count the animals. Make a kite and fly it with your children. Wonder. Marvel. Ask questions. Discover. Enjoy.
This journey back in time is available to you and your family year round and best of all, it’s free. Slate Run Living Historical Farm is located less than 15 miles from downtown Columbus near Canal Winchester. It is part of the Metro Parks system. This system consists of 14 parks that protect and preserve more than 22,500 acres of land and water in seven central Ohio counties.

The folks from Channel 4 in Columbus visited the farm in July.
They also created a brief video which shows the staff doing daily chores and interacting with visitors.
